So, you’d think that his everyday dialogue would reflect this…īut no. His 14-heart event is literally the player and Marnie (his aunt) worrying about him as they see him exit the saloon because of his alcoholism. He literally has to get his stomach pumped and he goes to a specialised councillor due to his poor mental health. The only time you get this with Shane is during his heart events. With the other characters, you get a real sense of them beginning to trust you, taking a liking to you, all that good stuff. You’re a stranger to them, at the end of the day. This makes the difference between him being hostile towards you and him being nice to you very sudden. Even as you gain hearts with him, his attitude towards you doesn’t immediately change. He usually asks why you are talking to him or just tells you to go away.
You can usually find Shane at the saloon most nights. So, when you first move into Stardew Valley, you meet all the villagers. Universal likes include maple syrup, Life Elixir, most artisan goods, cooking, flowers, foraged minerals, gems, vegetables, and fruit tree fruits. Shane also subscribes to almost all of the universal likes, with only one exception. However, many of these items are extremely rare and hard to come by. These include Prismatic Shards, the Golden Pumpkin, rabbit’s feet, pearls, and Magic Rock Candy. Shane doesn’t pose any problems to the list of universal loves, loving all of them without exception. There are a few exceptions to these, but for the most part, they can be a reliable way to level friendship with characters whose preferences you can’t remember. This means that almost everyone loves them (the universal loves) or likes them (the universal likes). Many items in Stardew Valley are considered universal gifts. Remember, items of higher qualities grant a bonus, with something of iridium-quality giving a whopping extra 50% bonus to friendship points when given. He likes all eggs except Void Eggs (which he dislikes) and all fruit except Hot Peppers (which he loves). Shane is pretty easygoing with liked gifts, without anything being too complicated. Stardew Valley differentiates between “loved” gifts, which grant 80 friendship points, and “liked” gifts, which grant 45. If you don’t have Shane’s loved gifts, you could give him some of the gifts he likes.

In Stardew Valley, giving a character a gift on their birthday will have 8x the effect in friendship points.
